Statement of Need

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a vaginal infection that causes discomfort and diminished quality of life for women as a result of vaginal discharge and an unpleasant amine odor. Often, BV is chronic. Beyond this, accumulating evidence indicates that BV also may be associated with other important health consequences, including an increased risk for pelvic inflammatory disease, preterm birth, and infections following gynecologic procedures. This educational activity provides clinicians with up-to-date information on BV, specifically regarding new findings in pathogenesis and etiology, natural history, clinical sequelae, and treatment of acute, recurring, and chronic infections.

Learning Objectives

After reading and studying the presentations and discussions in this supplement, participants should be prepared to:

• List the criteria for the diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis.

• Explain what is currently known about the normal vaginal ecosystem as well as the altered ecosystem associated with bacterial vaginosis.

• Describe what is currently understood about the pathogenesis and natural history of bacterial vaginosis.

• Discuss the objectives of treatment as well as the treatment options currently available for women with acute, recurring, and chronic bacterial vaginosis.
